A practical alternative to enhance Distance Learning for students in a time of the coronavirus pandemic.

At a time when students have to stay at home because of the coronavirus pandemic, the experiences that any student has in their home-life can be transformed into academic opportunities for them to learn the expected academic standards in any subject area.

What is the meaning of Home-Classing?

It is the idea of converting every student’s home-life into a classroom. This means that the student will be looking at items, events, and experiences that occur in their home-life and make academic applications to them. Teachers will develop the appropriate Home-Classing Frameworks for those assignments.

The concept of Home-Classing came out of the coronavirus pandemic. In the wake of the closing of school during the Spring of 2020, there was a lot of concern about how and when schools will be re-opened in the fall. This decision about the specifics of the re-opening of school became quite an issue during the summer month of June. This was crucial because by July, the school system needed to have something in place. What emerged were a number of models proposing different ways of opening schools. Many school districts had to debate around the current number of new positive cases, the social distancing issue, parental concerns and the pragmatics of implementation. It was during that time the idea of Home-Classing came to me. I thought that, with whichever model a school system adopts, there should be some provision to expect that some students will have to be staying at home. They might have to stay at home a few days of the week because having all the students in school would create a serious problem with social distancing. During that time they are at home, teachers could give them Home-Classing assignments that are directly related to their home-life experiences.

When the teacher assigns a Home-Classing Framework to a student, all the information that the student needs is included in the framework. The teacher’s only obligation would be to evaluate the completed assignment using the rubric found in the framework and give the student a grade. With the Home-Classing Framework, the only requirement the student needs is to have a mean of getting the framework from the teacher and to send the completed assignment back to the teacher. This can be done through email and a platform like Microsoft Team or in person when the student comes to school on the days that he/she is assigned to be in school.
